Let me take you back in the history and share with you some of the delightful moments of World Cup Cricket 1996. This was a year of glory for the cricket fans of Sri Lanka. World Cup 1996 was played in Pakistan and India.
I have planned to write a complete blog post on the History of World Cup 1996. Let me share with you some moments so that you will get the refresh. Arjuna Ranatunga was captain of team Sri Lanka with start batsman Aravinda DeSilva. The team played superbly in group stages and reached the Semi-Final where host team India was waiting on the home ground to play against Sri Lanka in the Semi Final of World Cup 1996.
Team Sri Lanka batted 1st and put up a competitive total of 251 Runs on the board. Indian team chasing a total of 251 runs seemed pretty unstable and kept on losing wickets with interval when at one stage crew got out of control and unfortunately, the management has to abandon the match declaring Sri Lanka as winners.
In the World Cup 1996 Final. Australia met Sri Lanka at Lahore (Gadaffi Stadium). No one has expected that team Sri Lanka will beat Australia so easily. Australia batting 1st scored 241 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Sri Lanka team chasing lost their 2 wickets in quick succession. But later the partnership of Desilva and Ranatunga proved to be worth winning for the team Sri Lanka. The trophy was distributed by Bainazeer Bhutto the Ex-Priminister of Pakistan who later passed away in a terrorist attack.
Sri Lanka became World Champions of ICC World Cup Cricket 1996 at Lahore.
